Aleksander Heintalu (born May 31, 1941 in Tartu ; † August 19, 2015 in Saaremaa ) was one of the best-known Estonian folk healers under the name Vigala Sass .

Life

Aleksander Heintalu was born as Aleksander Rassapkin. He wrote that his mother was Chudic and his father was a Slavic Jew . Heintalu himself counted himself to the South Estonian ethnic group of the Setukese .

After graduating from school, he worked as a metal worker. After completing his military service in the Red Army (1960–1963), he did an apprenticeship as a horticultural specialist in Räpina . He later studied agronomy at the Estonian Academy of Agriculture ( Eesti Põllumajandusakadeemia ) in Tartu, where he received his doctorate in 1987.

From 1968 to 1984 Heinsalu worked as a teacher at the agricultural labor school in Vigala before he became known as a folk healer and alternative medicine. Since the 1980s he lived an alternative life on the island of Saaremaa on the Männisalu farm in the village of Triigi . There he ran a nursery for medicinal plants and an arboretum with over 800 different tree plants . There is also a pagan cult site with a sacred grove in the courtyard .

Aleksander Heintalu lived with the Estonian artist Elo Liiv (* 1971). The couple had four children. He also had a son from a previous marriage.

Folk Healer

Vigala Sass was known as a folk healer in Estonia with numerous books. One of his animistic principles is: "Everything around us is animated or can be animated." He propagated a life in harmony with nature, which primarily includes natural and alternative healing methods. In particular, he advocated greater use of electromagnetism as a healing method .

He was as close to the old (pagan) Estonian folk belief as to Buddhist elements. His healing books ( raviraamatud ) , published over the years, have found great popularity in Estonia.
