Karujärve is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community of Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community of Kihelkonna ) in the Saare district .

Population, location and history

The village has no residents today (as of December 31, 2011). It is located north of the 330 hectare Karujärv Lake, 26 kilometers from the island's capital, Kuressaare .

The village was founded after the Second World War . During the Soviet occupation of Estonia it was called Dejevo. It was named after the Soviet war hero Vladimir Deew (Владимир Николаевич Деев), who was fatally wounded in Saaremaa in October 1944.
