Ruins of the Orthodox Church

Tiirimetsa (German Tirimetz ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the Saaremaa rural community (until 2017: Salme rural community ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 50 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 21 kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kuressaare .

Orthodox Church

The Orthodox Nativity of Christ Church was built in 1873 as a type model. The largest onion paddock and four smaller domes rested on an almost square floor plan.

The church was badly damaged in 1944 during the bitter fighting in World War II. Since then it has only been in ruins.

Evangelical Lutheran House of Prayer

The village's Evangelical Lutheran prayer house was built from wood in 1935. The architect of the functionalist building with its high roof is not known.

As an altar painting from 1934 shows Christ with the disciples. It dates from 1934. A dolomite memorial plaque was brought here from the church of Anseküla, which was destroyed during the Second World War . It lists the names of the local pastors.
