Piila

Piila (German Pihla ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .
Population and location
The village has 39 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 12.93 km².
The place is located 18 kilometers northwest of the island's capital Kuressaare . It was first mentioned in 1645.
Orthodox Church
The Piila Orthodox Church was built in 1873. It bears the name of the Archangel Michael . The church with its central dome and the four smaller domes of the corner towers was built on the plan of a Greek cross .
The type construction was planned by the Hamburg-born architect Heinrich Carl Scheel (1829–1909). The iconostasis dates from 1852; it was supplemented by later works. The local cemetery is located by the church.
The parish of Pihla is now subordinate to the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church (EAÕK).
