The village of Abruka ( Abruka küla ) is located on the island of the same name Abruka . Administratively it belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 33 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 10.66 km². The distance to Kuressaare is about thirteen kilometers as the crow flies.

The administrative area of ​​the village also includes the islands of Vahase , Kasselaid , Linnusitamaa and Kirjurahu as well as twelve other small islets.

history

The island was probably already settled in the Middle Ages. A court location has been documented since the 16th century . It initially belonged to the local bishop , who ran a horse breeding program on the island. In the 18th century, farmers settled on the island.

From 1881 to 1972 there was a primary school on the island.

Personalities

The two twin brothers Jüri (1940–2014) and Ülo Tuulik (1940–) were born in Abruka . You have both made a name for yourself as writers.
