Jüri Tuulik

Jüri Tuulik (born February 22, 1940 in Abruka ; † July 3, 2014 in Kuressaare ) was an Estonian writer . He was the twin brother of the Estonian writer Ülo Tuulik .

Life

When the German troops who had occupied Estonia withdrew from Saaremaa at the end of World War II , Tuulik and his family were forcibly evacuated in 1944-45. After returning to Estonia, he attended elementary school on the small island of Abruka from 1947 to 1952 and from 1952 to 1958 the grammar school in what was then Kingissepa (now Kuressaare ). After graduating from high school, he studied Estonian language and literature at the University of Tartu from 1958 to 1963 . He then worked as a journalist before becoming a freelance writer in 1969. Since 1972 he was a member of the Estonian Writers' Union .

Tuulik made his debut in local newspapers in 1956, his first book appeared in the fourth cassette of the so-called "cassette generation" in 1966. He then presented numerous other books, some of which depicted rural life in folk humor. This is why it has occasionally been compared in German criticism with Russian village prose . In many of his works the verbatim speech is written in the dialect of the West Estonian islands, which gives his prose an additional local flavor.

Tuulik also wrote plays and radio plays. In addition to German (see below), his books have also been translated into Bulgarian, Latvian, Polish and Russian.

Awards

Reception in Germany

Jüri Tuulik is one of the Estonian authors who are comparatively well received in German-speaking countries, as two books by him have been published in the GDR:

Tuulik's stories were often perceived as humoresque, as the translator Ruprecht Willnow reported: After the publication of Unter uns Hunden said he went on a reading trip entitled "Black Humor from Estonia" and was always well received by the audience, despite the humor "sometimes went to the limit of good taste".
