Helga Viira
Helga Viira (until 1940 Helga Pedusaar , 1940–1949 Helga Kross , born May 25, 1920 in Tallinn ; † March 7, 2002 ibid) was an Estonian translator who mainly translated Estonian literature into German.
life and work
Helga Viira graduated from high school in Tallinn in 1938 and then studied German philology at the University of Tartu . She interrupted her studies several times and only graduated in 1952. During the German occupation of Estonia in World War II (1941–1944) she was a radio interpreter, from 1950 to 1962 she was an editor at the Estonian State Publishing House. From 1955 to 1980 she was a German lecturer at various Tallinn universities.
Helga Viira was married to the Estonian writer Jaan Kross from 1940 to 1949 and has been a member of the Estonian Writers ' Union since 1974 .
