Irja Grönholm

Irja Dittmann-Grönholm (born June 18, 1951 in Eberswalde ) is a German translator of Estonian-language literature .

Living and translating

Irja Grönholm is of Estonian-Swedish descent. She grew up bilingual in German and Estonian .

Grönholm graduated from high school in 1970. She then studied biology at the Ernst Moritz Arndt University in Greifswald until 1974 .

From 1974 to 1984 Grönholm was a research assistant at the Academy of Sciences in East Berlin . She has been a freelance translator for Estonian literature since 1984 . She has presented a wide range of translations from the fields of fiction, drama, children's books and non-fiction.

Irja Grönholm has, among other works of Jaan Kross , Maimu Berg , Mati Unt , Eeva Park , Mari seed and Ervin Õunapuu and plays by Jaan Tätte , Merle Karusoo , Peeter Jalakas and Tiit Ojasoo translated into German. From 1990 to 2004 she was co-editor of the magazine estonia .

Grönholm lives in Berlin and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania .

Awards

1991 she was awarded the Estonian Writers' Union the price via Estica . In 2008 and 2009 she received the annual prize of the state foundation Eesti Kultuurkapital .
