Belhara Perdun , or simply Belharra , is a reef off the French Atlantic coast and also the name of the wave breaking there.

location

The reef is located near Socoa , a town in the French Pyrénées-Atlantiques department , between Hendaye and Saint-Jean-de-Luz . Belharra is 2.5 km off the coast in the open Atlantic. The Spanish border is only about five kilometers southwest of the reef. In the area of the reef, the water depth is around 14 to 18 meters. The surrounding seabed drops to more than 20 meters. The entrance to the bay of Saint-Jean-de-Luz is not far from the rocky reef.

Surfing

On days with the appropriate swell , one of the largest surfable waves in the world breaks over the reef. The swell required for this is rarely achieved in the Atlantic. In some years, because of this, the wave does not break at all. On November 22nd, 2002 the wave was surfed for the first time. The wave can break at a height of 20 m.

Others

When the water is calm, the reef is also a destination for divers.
