Ervin Õunapuu (born July 30, 1956 in Rapla ) is an Estonian writer.

life and work

After graduating from high school, Ervin Õunapuu studied painting at the Tartu Art Academy . He made his debut in 1996 with his first novel Olivia meistriklass (German: Olivia. Meisterklasse , 2003) which was a great success in Estonia immediately after its publication . He then published several short stories in various Estonian magazines. In 1999 the first collection of his short stories was published under the title Eesti gootika , which are based on the genre of the horror novel . For the short story Väike Lilli Noarootsist he received the prestigious Tuglas Prize . In 1999 Õunapuu's novella Teie mälestuseks, kes iganes te olete ja kus asute , and a year later the novella Väike palveraamat appeared . This was followed by collections of short stories under the titles Surmaminejad lasevad tervitada (2000), Mõõk (2002), Sinu teejuht ristiusku (2003), Eesti gootika II (2004) and Meie igapäevane jää (= Eestika gootika III , 2006). The short stories from Eesti gootika I and II appeared in German in 2005 under the title "The smelly gloves of the boss" in the translation by Irja Grönholm .

Ervin Õunapuu also works as a screenwriter , director and film producer.

The avowed atheist was also known as a sharp critic of the Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Church (EELK) and the role of the Christian churches in world history in general.
