Jõgela

Jõgela is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .
Population and location
The village has 22 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). Its area is 8.95 km².
The place is 29 kilometers west of the island's capital Kuressaare .
Pilgus
In 1997 the village of Pilguse (German Hoheneichen ) was incorporated. It is located directly on the Pilguse Laht bay in the Baltic Sea .
In 1558 the local bishop Johann von Münchhausen enfeoffed Heinrich von Bellingshausen with lands. This gave rise to the Pilguse farm. It was enlarged in 1568. From 1558 to 1778 the estate was owned by the noble Baltic German family Bellingshausen . The Estonian-speaking name Pilguse is also derived from it.
The estate then belonged to the doctor and writer Johann Wilhelm Ludwig von Luce (1793–1805) and the Aderkas (1805–1837), Nolcken (1837–1892) and Ruckteschell (1892–1908) families .
In 1908 the Russian farmer's agricultural bank bought the estate with its manor house. A psychiatric hospital was operated there from 1909 to 1994.
The one-story stone mansion was probably built in the second half of the 18th century. It was heavily redesigned at the beginning of the 20th century. The property, renovated in 2000, with the manor house and the outbuildings, is now a hotel.
Personalities
The most famous son of the place is the seafarer Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen (1778-1852), who was born in the nearby Lahetaguse and who spent his childhood days in Pilguse. He participated in Russian service from 1803 to 1806 in the circumnavigation of the world led by Adam Johann von Krusenstern and achieved great fame through his Antarctic expedition from 1819 to 1821.
