Metsküla Orthodox Church

Metsküla is a village on the Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the Saaremaa rural community (until 2017: Leisi rural community ). Metsküla has 124 inhabitants (as of 2007).

Metsküla is best known for the orthodox "Presentation of the Lord" church ( Estonian Issanda Templisseviimise kirik ) with its two onion domes . It is one of the best preserved examples of Estonia's wooden church architecture. The log church was built between 1909 and 1914.

The church comes from the end of the russification phase in Estonia. At the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century, as part of the Russian Orthodox proselytizing in Estonia, which was promoted by the Tsarist government in Russia , numerous Saaremaa residents converted from the Lutheran to the Orthodox faith.

The Metsküla Church is now part of the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church ( Eesti Apostlik-Õigeusu Kirik ). It is subordinate to the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople .
