Purtsa is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Leisi ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has six inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 26 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare .

The moor of the same name (Purtsa soo) with its large lake, the Purtsa järv, extends west of Purtsa .

history

The village of Purts was first mentioned in 1570. The name is possibly derived from the name Buhrmeister (Bauermeister). The Baltic German family owned land in the area at the time.

Wallburg

To the northeast of the town center, archaeologists have found remains of a medieval Estonian hill fort overgrown by the forest. Presumably it is the Maperzar Castle, which was destroyed in 1344/45 . The sandy heights between Wallburg and the present site called Kooljamäed (in German "corpses").

Historians assume that one of the last and bloodiest battles of the so-called " uprising on St. George's Night " took place at this point during the uprising of the Estonian rural population of Saaremaa against the Christian Danish and German conquerors in February 1344 . About 2000 Estonians and 500 Germans are said to have died. The Estonian leader, King Vesse, was also captured, tortured and executed during the fighting.
