The Volmetal nature reserve is a 4  hectare nature reserve (NSG) south of Strücken along the western city limits of Lüdenscheid in the Märkisches Kreis in North Rhine-Westphalia . The area was designated as a NSG in 1994. It is west of the federal highway 54 . Most of the NSG is east of the Volmetal Railway. The NSG wedged between the federal road and the railway line.

Area description

The nature reserve is a near-natural section of the Volme and its floodplain . The Volme is lined with woody banks with sycamore maple, ash and alder and high shrub fringes. The river valley is laterally limited and narrowed by a federal road and a railway line. The low mountain range river has fast flowing and calm sections. The high perennial borders are dominated by glandular balsam. Gravel areas along the river are occupied by extensive butterbur meadows. The river has gravel banks locally. To the north of Stephansohl there are mighty natural stones in the river bed, which at this point shape the image of a wild river. At the height of Linnepermühle, within a bend in the valley, there is a younger hardwood plantation with a small rock overgrown with mosses and ferns.

Protection purpose

The purpose of protection is to maintain a diverse and intact river biocenosis by refraining from disruptive uses.
