Aru (German Arromois ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Leisi ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 21 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 34 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare .

history

In 1319, the episcopal vassal Mondesvaste de Arole was mentioned in a document. He was of Estonian origin. Maybe he owned the area.

The village of Arrull is recorded for 1519 . The Arromois manor has been occupied since 1782 . Its last owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the Baltic German Georg von Rehekampff .
