Kangrusselja (German Kangern ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Pihtla ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 40 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located on the road connecting the island's capital, Kuressaare, and the Kuivastu ferry port , which leads to the mainland.

court

In 1479 Jürgen Wedberg was enfeoffed with the court tho Kangern and three hooks up the rugge . It was owned by the von Wedberg family until 1678. From 1805 to 1905 it belonged to the von Ekesparre family .

Village jug

Kangrusselja is best known for its historic Kalmukõrts village jug , which has been documented since 1790. It served as a post office for the postal route established the year before between Kuressaare and Pärnu . The building was redesigned several times over the next two centuries.
