Riksu (German Rikso ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .

Population, location and history

The village has 30 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). It is located 23 kilometers southwest of the island's capital Kuressaare .

The place was first mentioned in 1645. It is located on Lake Riksu järv , a former Baltic Sea bay. The 19.6 kilometer long Riksu oja stream flows into the lake . The area is best known as a breeding area for numerous bird species.

Personalities

The photographer and actor Mihkel Õnnis (1892–1983) was born in Riksu .
