The Järise lake

Tuiu (German Tuijo ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Mustjala ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has three residents (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 28 kilometers northwest of the island's capital Kuressaare .

To the east of the village center is the 96.4 hectare lake Järise järv .

archeology

Tuiu was home to one of the largest pre-Christian and medieval iron making centers in what is now Estonia. Archaeologists have scientifically explored the area since 1963. They were able to prove traces of the melting furnaces and forges of that time. The iron making was probably connected to the nearby castle of Paatsa , where the remains of a forge were also uncovered.
