Ilpla (German Ilpel ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island of Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural community Saaremaa (until 2017: rural community Pihtla ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 61 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is ten kilometers northeast of the island's capital, Kuressaare .

Well

The place was first mentioned in 1453 under the name Ylpel . Around the middle of the 18th century the local estate was founded on land devastated by the Northern War .

After the expropriation as part of the Estonian land reform , the town's school was housed in the massive, single-storey mansion from 1919 to 1940. Soldiers were then housed in it. Today the historic building is privately owned as a residential building.
