Käesla (German Kaesel ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the rural municipality Saaremaa (until 2017: rural municipality Lääne-Saare ) in the Saare district .

Population and location

The village has 45 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2016). It is located 16 kilometers northwest of the island's capital Kuressaare .

history

Hof Kaesel was first mentioned in a document in 1526 . From 1625 to 1730 it belonged to the strengh (or strength) family. The last private owner before the expropriation in the course of the Estonian land reform in 1919 was the Baltic German Georg von Schmidt.
