Kahtla

Kahtla (German Kjachtla ) is a village ( Estonian küla ) on the largest Estonian island Saaremaa . It belongs to the Saaremaa rural community (until 2017: Laimjala rural community ) in the Saare district .
description
The village was first mentioned in 1453 under the name Cachtel . It has 35 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011). It is located 36 kilometers northeast of the island's capital Kuressaare .
school
As early as 1836, on the initiative of the local landlord, a school was founded on site. In 1850 it became a Russian Orthodox parish school.
The current school building dates from 1940. Students were among others the writers Debora Vaarandi (1916–2007) and Henno Käo (1942–2004).
church
The Kachtla Orthodox Church was built between 1871 and 1873. It is a type project by the Hamburg- born architect Heinrich Carl Scheel (1829–1909), who works in Riga . In 1912 a 32 meter high bell tower was added to the church and the west wing of the church was expanded.
The church is named after the Doctor of the Church and Bishop Basil the Great . Today it is subordinate to the Estonian Apostolic Orthodox Church (EAÕK).
A cemetery is attached to the church. There is also a communal grave for those who died in World War II. A dolomite column almost three meters high with Estonian and Russian inscriptions has been a reminder of the victims since 1974.
