Henno Käo (born January 10, 1942 in Laimjala , † July 2, 2004 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian writer , graphic artist and book illustrator.

Life

Käo studied at the art school in Tartu from 1958 to 1963 and then worked for Tallinnfilm from 1963 to 1968 as a director of puppet films. After further training he was employed as an artist at the Tallinn amusement parks from 1969 to 1982, after which he lived as a freelance writer in the Estonian capital.

Käo was also active as a singer with the music ensemble Peoleo and also wrote texts for other groups ( Apelsin , Kukerpillid, etc.). He had been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1991 .

In addition to song lyrics, Käo also wrote children's books at an early age, most of which he illustrated himself. In it he dealt expressively with the psyche and imagination of children and increasingly concentrated on imaginative and comical ghost stories. In the criticism he was described as the "most consistent children's book author in the field of fantasy" because, unlike many colleagues, he hardly tried to create a realistic representation. In contrast, he sometimes even entered the science fiction genre .

Henno Käo also published several volumes of poetry for adults ( Apartment of the Soul , 2001; Letters and Stools , 2004). As an illustrator , he also designed children's books by Ott Arder , Leelo Tungal , Voldemar Miller and others. Some of Käo's books have been translated into Danish, English and Russian, but no texts by him have yet been published in German.
