Voldemar Miller

Voldemar Miller (born January 25 . Jul / 7. February  1911 greg. In Tagamõisa ; † 26. April 2006 in Tallinn ) was an Estonian book scientist, historian, local historian and children's book author .

life and work

Miller graduated from high school in Kuressaare and studied history at the University of Tartu from 1930 to 1942 with several interruptions . In 1944 he was mobilized into the Wehrmacht , because Estonia was occupied by Germany at the time during the Second World War . After the war he initially worked in the archives service, but came under political pressure under Stalinism and in 1949 ran the risk of being imprisoned and exiled. He was only just able to save himself into an inner emigration . From 1952 to 1977 he was employed in the Baltica department of the Academic Library of Tallinn University , later as its director.

Miller presented his most important works in the field of Estonian book history. The anthology for the 450th anniversary of the first Estonian print (1975), which appeared three years late in 1978, is largely thanks to his initiative and drive.

In his later years, Miller devoted himself to children's literature and had been a member of the Estonian Writers' Union since 1995 .
