Lawrence M. Small

Lawrence M. Small (born September 14, 1941 in New York City ) is an American bank manager and former head of the Smithsonian Institution .

Life

Small earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish literature from Brown University in 1963 . He later worked in the management of Citicorp and Citibank , and in 1991 became President and CEO (chief operating officer) of the state real estate financier Fannie Mae . From 2000 to 2007 he was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution . Small, who came from the business world, and his resulting view of the future of the Smithsonian led to conflicts with the "Board of Regents", which was predominantly from the academic field. His primary focus was securing and funding the Smithsonian's aging infrastructure. He resigned on March 28, 2007 for criticizing expense reports and management practices. Acting secretary was then the biologist Cristián Samper , until the Smithsonian again reached calmer waters.
