Robert McCormick Adams Jr.
Robert McCormick Adams Jr. (born July 23, 1926 in Chicago , Illinois - † January 27, 2018 in Chula Vista , California ) was an American anthropologist and archaeologist .
Robert McCormick Adams studied at the University of Chicago , where he received his doctorate in 1957 and worked from 1962 to 1968 and from 1981 to 1983 as director of the Oriental Institute . His scientific focus was the Near and Middle East as well as Mesoamerica . His work in Iraq attracted particular attention in scientific circles. He was Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution from 1984 to 1994 .
In 1967 he became a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , in 1970 a member of the National Academy of Sciences and in 1976 of the American Philosophical Society . In 2002, he received the Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement from the Archaeological Institute of America for his achievements .
