Hans J. Nissen

Hans Jörg Nissen (born June 22, 1935 in Heidelberg ) is a German archaeologist from the Middle East .

Life

Hans J. Nissen studied law , ancient Near Eastern and Middle Eastern archeology. In 1964 he received his doctorate in Heidelberg . From 1965 to 1967 Nissen was a consultant at the branch office of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI) in Baghdad . From 1968 to 1971 he was Assistant Professor of Near Eastern Archeology at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago . From 1971 to 2000 he was a full professor at the chair for Near Eastern geriatric studies at the Free University of Berlin . He is a full member of the German Archaeological Institute, the Archaeological Society of Berlin and the German Orient Society .

Hans J. Nissen was involved in many excavations in Iraq , Iran , Jordan and Pakistan . The excavations in Uruk (Iraq) in the years 1964 to 1967 and in Basta in Jordan from 1986 to 1992 stand out in particular . In addition to his work in research and teaching, Nissen was also involved in the self-administration of the Free University. He was dean of his department for several terms and vice-president of the university from 1976 to 1981.

Nissen has been married to the archaeologist and photographer Margret Nissen , Albert Speer's daughter , since 1962 .
