David Jan Skorton (born November 22, 1949 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American medical doctor , university professor and chairman of the Smithsonian Institution since 2015 . From 2006 to 2015 he was President of Cornell University .

biography

After attending school, he began studying psychology at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1966 and continued this in 1968 at Northwestern University , where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (BS Psychology) in 1970 . He then completed postgraduate studies in medicine at the Northwestern Medical School and graduated in 1974 with a Medical Doctor (MD) .

In 1980 he accepted a position as professor of medicine at the University of Iowa and taught there for more than 25 years until 2006. First he was director of the laboratory for cardiovascular treatments from 1982 to 1996 and also director of the department between 1985 and 1989 for general internal medicine and from 1989 to 1992 co-chair of the clinical programs in the department of internal medicine. He was then vice president of the University of Research from 1992 to 2003 before becoming president of the University of Iowa from 2003 to 2006.

From September 7, 2006 to June 30, 2015, David Skorton was President of Cornell University in Ithaca (New York) and thus of one of the eight universities of the so-called Ivy League . Skorton has been the chairman of the Smithsonian Institution since July 1, 2015. Skorton is also a member of several medical organizations and became a member of the American Heart Association in 1978 , the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1980, the American College of Cardiology in 1981 , the American College of Physicians in 1984 and the American Physiological Society in 1987 .

He is also a member of the Board of Governors of the New York Academy of Sciences . In November 2010 he became a member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academies , in 2011 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences , and in 2017 to the American Philosophical Society .
