Cristián Samper

Cristián Samper (born September 25, 1965 in San José , Costa Rica ) is an American tropical biologist of Colombian origin. He has been President of the Wildlife Conservation Society since 2012 .

Life

Born in Costa Rica, he grew up in Colombia with his father Armando Samper Gnecco and studied biology at the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia) . He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1992 with a dissertation on Natural disturbance and plant establishment in an Andean cloud forest. Back in Colombia, he initiated the founding of the IVH Research Institute for Biological Resources Alexander von Humboldt . From 2003 to 2012 he was director of the National Museum of Natural History in Washington, DC In 2007, following the resignation of Lawrence M. Small as director of the Smithsonian Institution for criticizing expense reports and management practices, Samper served as acting secretary until the Smithsonian 2008 calmer waters again reached. Since 2012 he has been President of the Wildlife Conservation Society , a major US conservation foundation.

Samper is married and has two children.
