Vahase is an Estonian island in the Baltic Sea . It is located about 200 meters west of the island of Abruka . Vahase administratively belongs to the rural community Saaremaa in the Saare district .
description
The island was first mentioned in 1645 under the name Wahaso . It is lightly forested. Juniper , oak and pine dominate the flora .
Around the beginning of the 1920s a homestead was built on the island.
Due to the low seas, it is possible to walk from Abruka to Vahase. In the south of the elongated island there is an eleven meter high lighthouse. It was built in 1973.
Two large boulders lie 15 meters apart on the eastern bank . According to legend, they came to the island through the giant Suur Tõll . The stones have been under nature protection since 1937.
literature
Vahase gained greater fame through the literary description in the novel Tuulte tallermaa ( Playground of the Winds ) by the Estonian writer Albert Uustulnd . The work was published in two volumes in 1985 and 1990.
