Albert Uustulnd (born November 6, 1925 in Suure-Rootsi , † August 9, 1997 in Kuressaare ) was an Estonian writer .

Life

After primary school in his home village, Uustulnd went to grammar school in Kuressaare in 1940, where he was mobilized into the Wehrmacht in 1943 during the German occupation of Estonia . Although he allegedly succeeded in deserting in 1944, it is also possible that he just fled from the advancing Red Army , which put him in a POW camp. From there, after being sentenced to ten years in prison, he went to Siberia, from where he was able to return a few years later on the basis of forged papers. In 1948 he was able to do his Abitur in Kuressaare.

He then studied economics by distance learning at the Tallinn Polytechnic . He graduated in 1954 and then worked in the fishing industry and later in other economic sectors. Since 1977 he was head of the marketing department of the largest fishing kolkhoz on Saaremaa, Saare Kalur. His service in the German Wehrmacht was long denied him by the Soviet Estonian officials , which is why he never became a member of the Estonian Writers' Union.

Uustulnd made his debut as a playwright in 1948 with a play that was performed at school. Volksschwänke followed in the 1950s, mostly staged in smaller theaters. He also wrote radio plays and numerous popular song texts.

However, Uustulnd has become best known for his novels, which consistently deal with the life of the island's population. This puts him in a row with August Mälk , Aadu Hint and Juhan Smuul . His main work is the pentalogy Tummelplatz der Winde , which comprises a total of seven books (some volumes appeared in two parts) and was published between 1985 and 1998. It describes the fate of the coastal inhabitants from the end of the 19th century to the end of the Second World War .

The author's rich vocabulary was sometimes praised in the criticism, but some colleagues also found in some novels that only the past was recalled without reaching a higher level of abstraction.
