The Leichhardt River is a river in the northwest of the Australian state of Queensland .

Origin of name

The river is named after the German-Australian researcher Ludwig Leichhardt (1813–1848).

geography

The Leichhardt River rises at Rifle Creek on the southwest slopes of the Three Sisters , a low mountain range southeast of Mount Isa , and flows north to Lake Julius . Shortly after leaving it again at its northern end, it turns its course to the east in order to flow in an arc first to the northeast and then again to the north at the village of Kajabbi . It flows northeast of Burketown into the Gulf of Carpentaria .

The river has a catchment area of 32,878 km², in which mainly mining and livestock are operated.

It does not have water all year round. The headwaters become a series of water holes in the dry season . The catchment area and estuary of the Leichhardt River are in an almost untouched state.

The reservoirs on the river are Lake Moondarra and Lake Julius. The Leichhardt Falls are located about 50 km upstream from the mouth .
