Lake Julius is a reservoir in the northwest of the Australian state of Queensland . It lies at the mouth of Paroo Creek in the Leichhardt River , about 70 km northeast of Mount Isa . The dam and reservoir, completed in 1976, serve to supply the city of Mount Isa with drinking water and to irrigate the surrounding agricultural areas. The reservoir has a total volume of 127 million m³ with full damming, a surface of 1,255 ha and an average depth of 8.9 m.

The nominal capacity of the reservoir is 107.5 million m³ and the water level is 223.54 m.

design type

The dam is the only one of its kind in Queensland. It consists of several concrete arches and supporting ribs. The drainage channel directs the water over the arches. The outlet is 18.3 m above the lake bed. The arches are designed as basket arches and lie on triangular foundations that are suspended in the supporting ribs. The drainage channel is made up of precast concrete parts and the foundations are anchored in the rock.

modernization

The operator, SunWater , is currently expanding the outlet.
