Lake Moondarra is a reservoir in the northwest of the Australian state of Queensland . It lies on the Leichhardt River , extends 13 to 20 km north of Mount Isa and serves to supply the city with drinking water and to supply the surrounding copper, zinc and silver mines with industrial water. ( Mount Isa Mines ).
history
Construction of the dam began in 1956 and on November 6, 1958 the work, which had cost £ 1.7 million, was completed. The dam was built for Mount Isa Mines and was then the largest privately financed hydraulic engineering project in Australia. Construction was started by Utah Construction , but Thiess Brothers eventually completed it.
On July 11, 1961, the reservoir was renamed 'Lake Moondarra' after a naming competition won by Danny Driscoll , a resident of Mount Isa. This name, derived from the language of the local Aborigines , means: a lot of rain with thunder .
Facilities
At the reservoir there are picnic areas, swimming pontoons, a water ski ramp and other water sports facilities. The lake is also popular with bird watchers, sailors and anglers. There were barramundi and bream used.
The Transport Bay got its name because there trucks of Mount Isa Mines tons of sand started off Erten, to create an artificial beach.
