Leichhardt Falls

The Leichhardt Falls Coordinates: 18 ° 13 ′ 17 ″  S , 139 ° 52 ′ 37 ″  E are waterfalls in the northwest of the Australian state of Queensland . They lie in the course of the Leichhardt River , about 50 km above the mouth and 77 kilometers by road southeast of Burketown .

Above the Leichhardt Falls, the Savannah Way crosses the river between Burketown and Normanton . Nearby, on the western bank of the river, is the settlement of New Amraynald .

The falls are not particularly high, but are significant because of their width and many steps. Like the river, they are named after the German-Australian explorer Ludwig Leichhardt (1813–1848).
