The Landsborough Highway is a major trunk road in the west of the Australian state of Queensland . The road is 1,030 km long and runs from Cloncurry in the far northwest of Queensland in a south-easterly direction to Morven , a small town about 660 km west of the capital Brisbane . It is named after the Scottish explorer William Landsborough , who explored large parts of the surrounding area in the 19th century.

The Landsborough Highway is an important part of the Australian highway system as it forms part of the link between Brisbane and Darwin . The Landsborough Highway is also known as the Matilda Highway , named after the famous Australian song Waltzing Matilda .

The highway is paved throughout, but apart from larger towns there is often only one lane in the middle of the lane. This makes it necessary to use the unpaved hard shoulder when encountering multi-lane vehicles.

course

The Landsborough Highway begins approximately 12 km east of Cloncurry in northwest Queensland. There ends the Barkly Highway (NA2), which leads from the Northern Territory to Queensland. The road forks and starts the Flinders Highway (A6), which runs east to Townsville , and the Landsborough Highway, which branches off to the southeast.

The Landsborough Highway initially runs through rural areas with numerous farms that raise cattle and sheep. Winton is the first larger town to be reached after around 340 km.

Then comes Longreach , which is about 170 km southeast of Winton on the Tropic of Capricorn.

After Longreach the road makes a bend and goes east for about 100 km until it reaches Barcaldine . From there the Capricorn Highway (A4) continues east to Rockhampton . The Landsborough Highway then runs south for approximately 100 km until it reaches the town of Blackall . Behind Blackall the highway changes direction again to the southeast and leads to Augathella . There the Mitchell Highway (A2) branches off to the southwest and leads to Charleville , while the Landsborough Highway continues in a southeast direction to its end west of Morven. There the Warrego Highway (NA2) continues to Toowoomba in the east.

The highest point on the highway is at 476 m, the lowest at 166 m. The maximum gradient is 5%.
