Augathella is a city in the south of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located on the Matilda Highway / Landsborough Highway about 85 km north of Charleville and about 748 km west of Brisbane . Like Charleville, Augathella is on the Warrego River . The 2016 census counted 427 residents.
history
The town was founded as a resting place for drovers as three cattle driving routes, from Morven , from Tambo and from Charleville, met there. Initially the settlement was called Burenda , later it was renamed Ellangowan (still the name of a cattle trough there today) and from 1883 it was called Augathella . The latter name is apparently a word from the Aboriginal language , which means 'water hole' in German and refers to the Warrego River. This created a service center for the needs of drovers and ranchers.
today
The Matilda Highway, built in the 1980s, runs past the city to the east. Some new businesses have relocated right on the highway. There is a growing arts center in town, a public swimming pool, bowls club, and once a year a rodeo. Augathella also owns a few polocross teams.
Cattle breeding still dominates the city's economy today.
In 2011 a 4.5 m high sculpture of a meat ant ( Iridomyrmex purpureus ) in steel and copper was created at the entrance to the village . It is said to be reminiscent of a former soccer team in town - called Mighty Meat Ants .
