Don Richard Riso (born January 17, 1946 - August 30, 2012 in New York ) was an American co-founder and expert on the doctrine of the Enneagram . His publications are considered standard works and they have been translated into numerous languages.

Life

Riso grew up in New Orleans and Los Angeles and studied English and philosophy at Stanford University with an MA . Around 1962 he joined the Catholic Jesuit Order of the New Orleans Province. Contrary to some statements to the contrary, he was not ordained a priest.

It was probably through the psychiatrist Claudio Naranjo that Jesuit communities came into contact with the early Enneagram material, which word got around in various North American retreat houses as an aid for soul guidance in the early 1970s and was disseminated within themselves, especially by Robert Ochs, SJ. In any case, Riso got to know the Jesuit Enneagram material as a Jesuit seminarian in Toronto ( Canada ) in 1973/74 , which according to his own statements consisted of "... one page each of sketchy notes on the nine personality types" and aroused his interest.

In 1975 he separated from the Jesuits after thirteen years. He began to work out and expand the brief basics into detailed descriptions. Don Richard Riso describes it as his "important breakthrough" when he discovered the stages of development in 1977: For each type there are nine stages as "horizontal categories" from 1 (completely healthy or redeemed) to 9 (very disturbed). He also developed other aspects, for example the harmonic groups and names for the types.

After twelve years of work, he published his results in 1987 in his first book, Personality Types: Using the Enneagram for Self-Discovery and Understanding the Enneagram , published three years later .

In 1991 he was joined by Russ Hudson. This was originally done with the intention of drafting a questionnaire on the Enneagram types. Here came RHETI, the R iso H Udson E nneagram T ype I ndicator out. In the meantime, they have designed a number of different tests and short tests and revised them again and again. The current full version includes 144 decision questions.

Together with Hudson, he founded the Enneagram Institute in Stone Ridge, NY in 1995 , which he directed until his death. The institute offers courses and workshops as well as various publications. The Enneagram Institute Network is now represented in other US locations by branches in fifteen other states.

Hudson helped revise and expand Personality Types for the second edition; this was published in 1996. Since then they have taught the Enneagram worldwide; other book publications followed. Riso died on August 30, 2012 to cancer .

Riso classified his enneagram type according to his own statements as a FOUR with a THREE wing.
