The Matilda Highway is a trunk road in the outback of the Australian state of Queensland . The 1,356-kilometer road is the westernmost of Queensland's major north-south routes. It was named after the "unofficial national anthem" of Australia, Waltzing Matilda . The Waltzing Matilda Center , which was destroyed in a major fire in June 2015 and rebuilt in 2018, is located in Winton in the north-western section .

The northwestern part begins 14 kilometers east of Cloncurry and runs 954 kilometers southeast to Augathella . In this area the road is also called Landsborough Highway (NA2). This is followed by a 83-kilometer stretch to the southwest, which ends in Charleville , is also recorded as the Mitchell Highway and is signposted as alternative route A2. From there, the Matilda Highway / Mitchell Highway runs as the A71 over 319 kilometers south to the border with New South Wales at Barringun .
