Johann Baptist Stahl ( French Jean-Baptiste Stahl ; born June 20, 1869 in Oberbetschdorf , † January 31, 1932 in Keuchingen ) was an Alsatian porcelain sculptor and inventor of phanolith .

Life

Stahl was the son of Louis Stahl (* 1843) and Anna Maria Braun (* 1841). He was married to Angela Bausch from 1896. Stahl grew up in the family's traditional Alsatian pottery. His studies of ceramics and sculpture took him to nearby Strasbourg and Höhr-Grenzhausen . With his fine porcelain reliefs he won a Grand Prix at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900 . Johann Baptist Stahl created his work as an employee of the stoneware and porcelain factory Villeroy & Boch in Mettlach. He headed the drawing school there and was head of the modellers' workshop. His son Hans (born November 22, 1898 - † January 13, 1978) succeeded him in this position.

Stahl created an extensive work of ceramic relief art of around 300 objects. Based on rural themes and depictions of Greek mythology, his works developed into his own Art Nouveau creations . Its white, translucent figure reliefs let the blue or greenish porcelain background shine through. In order to intensify the three-dimensional illusion, he modulates this transparency and thereby achieves a painterly depth effect. Darker areas of the relief image create the impression of shadows and a deep background. Other areas of the relief appear in a brilliant white, as if the scene were illuminated by a light. This unique amalgamation of a three-dimensional relief image and a picturesque, translucent background image was given the name phanolith , translucent stone.

Johann Baptist Stahl achieved mastery as a porcelain artist in the so-called Pâte sur Pâte style. Precise pencil and ink drawings served Johann Baptist Stahl in preparation for his porcelain work. Colored workshop drawings exist of some of his objects. They were secured from the rubble of the Villeroy & Boch factory building by his grandson Erich Stahl (* March 24, 1931; † February 10, 2018) at the end of the Second World War.

reception

On November 10, 2019, an episode of the NDR's Lieb & Teuer program was broadcast, moderated by Janin Ullmann and filmed in Reinbek Castle . In it, a mural made of phanolith was discussed with the art historian Wilhelm Hornbostel , showing a girl's head , designed by Johann Baptist Stahl and created in the Villeroy and Boch manufactory in Mettlach around 1900.
