The Mount Coolum National Park (English: Mount Coolum National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located just over 100 kilometers north of Brisbane and approximately twelve kilometers north of Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast between the Sunshine Motorway and the coast.
National nature
The Mount Coolum is a lava dome , nearly circular floor plan and steep rock crashes on its south side. The mountain, about a kilometer from the beach, rises abruptly from the coastal plain to a height of 208 meters. Its appearance is similar to that of the Glass House Mountains , which are further south. Mount Coolum consists mainly of 25 million year old rhyolite that forms regular pillars and connecting patterns. An abandoned quarry can be found at the eastern foot of the mountain.
Flora and fauna
The national park is known for its remarkable plant diversity. More than 700 different species have been registered here. The most important plant communities are eucalyptus forest , coastal wallum heath , myrtle heath - wetlands , rare mountain heather and also some rainforest .
A pair of peregrine falcons were observed nesting on the cliffs in the south .
Facilities
An 800 meter long path leads from the parking lot on Tanah Street West in the settlement of Mount Coolum on the northeast flank to Mount Coolum. At first this path is flat and well developed, but it soon becomes very steep and narrow. In wet weather it can easily become very slippery. Around 140 people climb Mount Coolum every day.
There is a warning light on the mountain for planes taking off from the nearby Sunshine Coast Airport .
