The Eungella is a national park in Queensland , 83 kilometers west of Mackay . The park has a size of over 599 km². The park was founded in 1936. It is located in the Clarke Range and reaches a height of 1,280 m on the summit of Mt. Dalrymple. The clouds often pile up on these mountains, which has earned them the name "home of the clouds" in the language of the Aborigines. Precipitation amounts to 2,000 millimeters per year here.

Flora and fauna

The main attractions of the park are the distinct tropical rainforests , which have over 860 plant species. In the lower elevations one finds z. B. abundant epiphytes and orchids in the forests, while these in the higher elevations are characterized by teak trees, palms and huge specimens of the tree species Argyrodendron actinophyllum .

Nowhere can platypuses are so close and often seen as the Broken River , where viewing platforms facilitate the observation of the shy animals. Even bats are found regularly.

The number of living in the rain forest species alone amounts to 225, including only here on a small area endemic occurring Eungellahonigfresser . It is one of the five species of birds that have been discovered in Australia over the past 50 years. Other notable species are the yellow-naped bowerbird , the long-tailed fruit pigeon and the white-bellied sea eagle .

The northern gastric nesting frog , which was only discovered in this area in 1984, achieved notoriety . It lived on a small area of ​​less than 500 square kilometers and could not be found again a year after its discovery. Since then, the species has been considered extinct.

Hiking trails run through the rainforest from Broken River and Eungella, the only place in the park. The park has more than 20 km of hiking trails; it is also the starting point for the 35 miles long Mackay Highlands Great Walk. Much of the national park, however, is completely inaccessible.

The national parks Homevale , Bluff Hill , Mount Ossa and Mount Martin are in the vicinity .
