Ivry-la-Bataille is a French commune with 2,724 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the Eure in the region of Normandy . It belongs to the Arrondissement Évreux , the canton Saint-André-de-l'Eure and the municipality association Agglo du Pays de Dreux .
geography
Ivry-la-Bataille is located on the eastern edge of the Eure department on the Eure River , 64 kilometers west of Paris and 18 kilometers northeast of Dreux .
history
On aerial photographs traces can be seen from several buildings. The structures were surrounded by straight trenches and can not be dated without prospecting . Such finds mostly come from Gallo-Roman times, but they can also come from the Iron Age or the Middle Ages.
The first seigneur of Ivry-la-Bataille was Raoul d'Ivry († after 1015). His wife Alberède had the castle built. The Tower of London is said to have been built according to the same construction plan. The castle was built in 1119 by Ludwig VI. taken by France, in 1193 by Philip II of France and in 1418 by John Talbot, 1st Earl of Shrewsbury . The castle was demolished in 1424 on the orders of John of Lancaster, 1st Duke of Bedford . In 1449 the ramparts were further destroyed by Jean de Dunois after a long siege by English troops.
Before the Battle of Ivry , the village was called Ivry-la-Chaussée . After the royal army under the command of Henry IV of France had defeated the Holy League on March 14, 1590 under the command of Charles II. De Lorraine, duc de Mayenne (1554-1611), the village became Ivry-la-Bataille renamed ( French bataille means "battle").
1793 received Ivry-la-Bataille as Ivry in the course of the French Revolution (1789-1799) the status of a municipality and 1801 the right to local self-government . During the revolution, the village was renamed Ivry-la-Hauteur .

The town had the fewest inhabitants in 1800 (724), since then the community has grown and in 2006 it had the highest number of inhabitants (2,653).
Town twinning
There has been a town partnership between Ivry-la-Bataille and Laudenbach in Germany since 1981 .
Culture and sights
Ivry-la-Bataille is represented with two flowers in the Conseil national des villes et villages fleuris (National Council of Flowered Cities and Villages). The "flowers" are awarded in the course of a regional competition, whereby a maximum of four flowers can be achieved.
To commemorate the murder of Henry IV in 1610, exhibitions, concerts and guided tours were held in 2010. A local Calvados distillery dedicated a Calvados variety ( cuvée Henri IV) to the king .
Buildings
The so-called Maison de Henri IV is a house from the 16th century. It is privately owned and was entered in the supplementary directory of Monuments historiques in 1932 .
The castle dates from the 10th century. It is called Château d'Ivry or Château d'Alberède . It is owned by the municipality and was classified as a monument historique in 1990 (classé MH) . The club d'archéologie d'Ivry-la-Bataille has been maintaining the ruins since 1968 .
Roger d'Ivry founded a Benedictine monastery around 1070 . Over the years the monastery had 47 abbots and was destroyed and rebuilt several times. 1669, the monastery joined the congregation of Saint-Maur on. It was disbanded during the French Revolution. The Romanesque entrance portal, an arcade and a statue from the 12th century were classified as historical monuments in 1932. The remains of the monastery are privately owned.
The Gothic church of Saint-Martin dates from the 15th century. In the 17th century the roof of the church was renewed after a hurricane. It belongs to the municipality and was entered in the supplementary directory of the Monuments historiques in 1958 (inscrit MH) . In the church there is a stone statue of the Virgin and Child , which dates from the end of the 15th or beginning of the 16th century. It was protected as a historical monument in 1974. The baptismal font, which is also listed, dates from the 16th century. The basin shows ornaments of vines with lions and snails. On the church you can still see the inscription from the revolutionary time: Temple de la raison et de la philosophie ("Temple of Reason and Philosophy ").
economy
In the 19th century, the village was known for the production of fine leather goods , there were nine tanneries . In addition, were musical instruments , combs , billiard balls and laces made. There were three flour mills and two tan mills for the production of oak tan . Today there is a factory for the manufacture of telephone cables . Tourism has grown in importance, there are three campsites on site.
The station of Ivry-la-Bataille was served from the 1870s by the Elbeuf - Dreux line of the Compagnie du Chemin de Fer d'Orléans à Rouen ("Society of the Orleans to Rouen Railways"). From 1891 the railway line belonged to the Chemins de Fer de l'Ouest ("Railway of the West"). It was closed in the 20th century and turned into a voie verte . The Voie verte ("green way") is used as a cycling and hiking trail.
Protected Geographical Indications (IGP) apply to pork (Porc de Normandie) , poultry (Volailles de Normandie) and cider (Cidre de Normandie and Cidre normand) in the municipality .
