history

During the construction of the railway line from Évreux to Dreux in 1841, a skeleton was found behind Mésangère Castle in reddish alluvial soil . The workers threw the skull on a heap of rubble, breaking it and leaving only the browbone . The frontal bone was called Neanderthal at the time . Dominique Gambier (* 1947) had a cast of the skull from the Musée d'archéologie nationale in Saint-Germain-en-Laye re-examined during his time as rector of the University of Rouen . It turned out that, despite its robust nature, the bone does not correspond to that of a Neanderthal man, but that of a Cro-Magnon man , although the frontal bone was found in a layer of earth from the Middle Paleolithic . The layers were not thick enough at the site to allow accurate dating.

In 1976 and 1980, traces of settlement from the Bronze Age (2200 to 800 BC) were found on aerial photographs of different areas of the municipality .

In 1967 a chariot grave from the late Latène (150 BC to about 30 BC) was discovered. The tomb contained 90 objects or fragments of objects. Aside from parts of the wagon, forged nails, a sword, a shield boss , a kettle, spatula, razor , sickle and pottery were found. In aerial photographs taken in June 1982, trenches from the Late Latène were found, which were excavated in 1983 and 1984 .

In 1137, Foulques, the then Seigneur des Feuil -Benoît, founded a monastery with Benedictine monks from the Savigny monastery . In 1147 the Breuil-Benoît monastery joined the Clairvaux Cistercian monastery .

The Brazais fief came into the possession of the Bois-Rouvray family in 1469. In 1579 it fell through marriage to Joseph d'Esparbez de Lussan († 1599), who had the title Mestre de camp in 1584 and was close enough to Henry IV to get command of Nantes Castle . His son Charles († 1620) bought the Bas-Moteux fief in 1614. His son Gabriel founded a rosary brotherhood in Marcilly-sur-Eure in 1667 .

The Breuil-Benoît monastery was declared a national property during the French Revolution (1789–1799) . Altars, tabernacles, iron bars and lead coffins were dismantled or removed, then the monastery was sold to a notary in 1791 . He sold the property again in August 1793. In 1842 Gustave de Reise acquired the former monastery and had the ruins stabilized. He settled in the residential building of the monastery built at the beginning of the 17th century.
