The Mount Mackay National Park (English Mount Mackay National Park ) is a 36.8 square kilometer national park in Queensland , Australia . It is part of the UNESCO World Heritage Wet Tropics of Queensland and belongs to the Coastal Wet Tropics Important Bird Area , which has been designated as such by BirdLife International because it is important for the conservation of the birds in the tropical coastal rainforest.

The national parks Japoon , Tully Gorge , Djiru , Hull River and Girramay are in the vicinity .

location

It is located in the North Queensland region about 170 kilometers north of Townsville and 115 kilometers south of Cairns . The closest city is Innisfail . From here you can reach the park on the Bruce Highway south. After 45 kilometers you pass the park at the height of the village of Tully . There are no visitor facilities in the park itself.

Flora and fauna

The park protects the higher areas around Mount Mackay of the same name . The over 700 meters high summit, overgrown with primary tropical rainforest, rises over 600 from the surrounding plain. It has therefore been largely spared from clearing and agricultural use in the past. Here are native to many endangered animals and plant species, such as the Common Mist Frog ( Litoria rheocola ), the Southern Cassowary ( Casuarius casuarius johnsonii ) as well as the Apollo Jewel Butterfly ( Hypochrysops apollo apollo ), a butterfly of the family of Bläulinge .
