The Mount Walsh National Park (English: Mount Walsh National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is 230 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 84 kilometers west of Maryborough .

National nature

Consisting of granite existing Mount Walsh is a landmark in the area around Biggenden , which rises to 703 meters above sea level in the northern part of the park. The mountain has three peaks. There are hidden valleys, wild ridge lines with spectacular rock peaks and steep rock faces in the park.

The national parks Coalstoun Lakes , Ban Ban , Glenbar and Woowoonga are in the vicinity .

geology

The geological history of the mountain began in the Triassic , about 215 million years before our era. Huge explosions emanated from a volcanic structure called the Mungore Center . Two great columns of magma rose to the surface and formed the mountains of Mount Malarga and Mount Walsh . The erosion created the rock faces, domes, gorges and crags that we can see today.

Flora and fauna

The diverse landscape is home to a variety of different plant communities, such as B. Heathland, scrub, light woodland and dry forests. New Guinea araucarias also grow in some valleys .

This varied vegetation offers habitats for many endangered animal species, such as the giant owl ( Ninox strictua ) or the white-browed hawk . Peregrine falcons , dingoes , wallabies , eastern gray kangaroos, and spotted monitor lizards are occasional visitors.

Facilities

Wild camping in the park is permitted, but there are no tent sites. There is a picnic area for this.

A 300 meter long hiking trail leads visitors from the picnic area through sparse eucalyptus forest to a narrow valley with rainforest vegetation , then to various viewpoints. Experienced hikers are recommended to take the 2 ½ hour walk to the barren granite peak of Mount Walsh. There is a wonderful view from there.

Driveway

The national park can be reached via the Isis Highway . The junction is 2 kilometers north of Biggend. After 5.3 kilometers on the national park road you will reach the picnic area.
