The Naree Budjong Djara National Park (English: Naree Budjong Djara National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located 40 kilometers east of Brisbane on North Stradbroke Island .

The older Blue Lake National Park is part of the new national park.

history

The Quandamooka Aboriginal tribe had lived on the island for thousands of years . Even today there are close ties, so that the national park is jointly administered by the Aborigines and the Queensland National Park Administration. In the language of the Aborigines, the name of the national park translated into German means my mother earth .

National nature

North Stradbroke Island is the second largest sand island in the world, but it also has rocky capes.

Flora and fauna

Many important habitats that are particularly worth preserving are protected in the national park, such as B. Mangroves , heathland, wetlands, freshwater lakes and light primary forest .

Rare and endangered animal species are found in these habitats. Examples include the Cooloola frog ( Litoria cooloolensis ), the giant stork ( Ephippiorhynchus asiaticus ), the little tern ( Sternula albifrons ) and the endangered swallow- faced parakeet ( Lathamus discolor ). There is also a koala population that is genetically very different from the mainland populations.

Facilities and access

Camping is not permitted in the park, but there are several campsites outside the reserve on North Stradbroke Island. There are two landscaped hiking trails in the Blue Lake section , the Neembeeba Lookout Track (6 km) and the Karboora Track (5.2 km).

Driveway

The island can be reached from Cleveland by private boat in about 25 minutes or a ferry (to Dunwich ) in 50 minutes.
