The Cape Palmerston National Park (English: Cape Palmerston National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is located 748 km northwest of Brisbane and 115 km south-southeast of Mackay . The park protects one of the few remaining pristine stretches of coast between Bowen and St Lawrence .

Terrain forms

The national park is characterized by rocky capes, sand dunes, swamps and rainforests . The highest point is the 344 m high Mount Funnel .

Flora and fauna

In the park there are rain and mangrove forests as well as light woodland with eucalyptus . Eucalyptus forests grow on the ridges, while myrtle heaths are at home in the narrow valleys .

In the swamps there are frogs and other inhabitants of wetlands. On the beaches nesting stone curlews . Two-colored fruit pigeons can be found in the park in winter and spring. Here is the southern limit of their distribution area. In the cooler months of the year, you can watch humpback whales off the coast and sea ​​turtles swim in the water.

Access and facilities

The park is accessible from the Bruce Highway ( Ilbilbie exit ). The roads in the park are unpaved, so only four-wheel drive vehicles are recommended.

There are two campsites in the park, but they only have basic equipment. "Wild camping" is also permitted. One of the two campsites is equipped with a slipway for boats.
