The Ma'alpiku Island National Park (CYPAL) (English: Ma'alpiku Island National Park (CYPAL) , until 2011 Restoration Island National Park ) is a national park in the northeast of the Australian state of Queensland . It is located 1,928 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and about 20 kilometers north-northeast of Lockhart River , only a few hundred meters in the sea off Cape Weymouth and the Kutini-Payamu National Park .

The park consists of two small islands, Restoration Island with an area of 41 hectares and Restoration Rock with an area of 0.2 hectares, which is one kilometer east of the main island.

The park is administered by the local Aborigines together with the Queensland National Park Administration under the status of Cape York Peninsula Aboriginal Land (CYPAL) .

history

In the 18th century

On May 29, 1789, after the mutiny on the Bounty , Captain Bligh and 18 men who had remained loyal to him landed in the ship's lifeboat on this island. It was the first island they reached after a 4,000-mile voyage, and they named it Restoration Island because the food they found - oysters and local fruits - restored their spirits . This was also the anniversary of the reinstatement (ger .: restoration ) of Charles II. In 1660.

Bligh found traces of Aboriginal visits to the island such as simple huts and fire pits. He found kangaroo tracks and wondered if the natives might have brought the animals over from the mainland to breed because they would have been easier to catch on the small island later. When the group left the island two days later, he saw natives on the coast opposite the island, but made no contact with them.

Modern times

In 1989 the national park was established on Restoration Island. The western third of the island, however, is excluded. In 1993 this part was leased to the former businessman David Glasheen , who settled on the island. Individuals visiting the island and planning to live there for some time must first contact friends of Glasheen in Lockhart River and ask them to arrange a meeting. In December 2008, Glasheen advertised on an internet dating site to find a friend who would want to live on the island with him and his dog.

National nature

The two islands are made of granite . Restoration Island rises 116 meters above sea level, while Restoration Rock reaches 33 meters.

flora

The lower slopes of Restoration Island are covered with dense undergrowth, while myrtle heather spreads in the higher areas . On the peaks and ridges of the island there is wind-ruffled heathland. Restoration Rock has only sparse vegetation.

Facilities and access

Camping on the island is not permitted. There are also no hiking trails or other facilities.

The islands can only be reached by private boats.
