The Moogerah Peaks National Park (English: Moogerah Peaks National Park ) is a national park in the southeast of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is located about 70 kilometers southwest of Brisbane and consists of four individual areas in the Fassifern Valley , which are grouped around Lake Moogerah .

To the west and south of this national park is the Main Range National Park .

Moogerah Peaks

The Moogerah Peaks are a small mountain range of volcanic origin. The mountains Mount French , Mount Edwards , Mount Moon and Mount Greville can be found in each case in one of the four parts of the national park.

The Frog Buttress on Mount French is one of the most famous climbing spots in the state. The national park surrounds Lake Moogerah and so Mount Edwards is accessible via the dam.

Flora and fauna

Because of the relative inaccessibility of the park, the natural vegetation has remained almost untouched. These are mainly eucalyptus forests , hard-leaved vegetation and mountain heather landscapes on rugged terrain. There is some rainforest in protected areas . Rainforest used to cover the entire Fassifern Valley , but most of it has been cleared over time. Remnants can only be seen in the national park area around Mount French . The endemic plants include the Moogerah Peaks Leionema ( Leionema gracile ) and Mount Greville sedge ( Arundinella grevillensis ). The Palm Gorge is located on Mount Greville. In this narrow gorge one finds Bangalow palms ( Archontophoenix cunninghamia ) almost in their purest form.

The park is part of the Scenic Rim Important Bird Area , which has been designated as such by BirdLife International because of its importance as a habitat for several threatened bird species.

Facilities

There is only a campsite in the national park area around Mount French at the Frog Buttress .

There are also developed hiking trails only around Mount French . You can also hike in the other sections, but the trails through the bush are not particularly maintained and are only intended for experienced hikers.

Driveway

All four parts of the national park can be reached from the Cunningham Highway ( Aratula or Fassifern exit ). The Mount French is about four kilometers east of Fassifern state road 90. The Mount Edwards lies directly north of Lake Moogerah, about four kilometers south of Aratula . The Mount Greville located southwest of Lake Moogerah, about two kilometers west of the settlement Moogerah . Mount Moon , about five kilometers southeast of the same settlement, is surrounded by private land, so you have to ask the owners for a permit.
