The Gloucester Island National Park (English: Gloucester Island National Park ) is a national park in the east of the Australian state of Queensland .

location

It is located 950 kilometers northwest of Brisbane and 30 kilometers east of Bowen . It is part of the Great Barrier Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .

The Molle Islands and Whitsunday Islands national parks are in the vicinity ; Dryander National Park on the mainland .

National nature

The island on the continental shelf is more lonely than the other islands of the Whitsunday Islands , but it also offers sandy bays, reefs and tropical rainforests . The surrounding, small islands of Armit Island and Saddleback Island are also part of the national park.

history

The island was discovered by the British navigator and explorer James Cook in 1770, but was mistakenly mistaken for a mainland cape. That's why he named the country Cape Gloucester . It was later discovered that it was an island. Since then the island is called 'Gloucester Island', while the cape south of it is unofficially called 'Cape Gloucester'.

fauna

There is a colony of the endangered Proserpine rock kangaroos on the island . You can also watch many birds.

Facilities and access

Camping is possible in Bona Bay or East Side Bay on the main island, ebson as on Armit Island and Saddleback Island . There are toilets, picnic tables and canopies there.

The islands can only be reached by private and some commercial boats. Since the islands are relatively unprotected off the coast in the ocean, watch out for weather warnings.
